The monkey remembers being stunned once, reading comedy actor Ade Edmondson’s thoughts on his breakthrough “The Young Ones” years later. Edmondson stated that the anarchic energy of the 1980s was now “very, very slow,” rendering the hit comedy almost unwatchable. More years later the monkey rewatched this teen favourite... Edmondson was right.
For the record, the monkey has never seen “Dr Strangelove” the movie, and can only judge on what it saw here. Sadly, it feels this Armando Iannucci / Sean Foley adaptation has exactly the same problem.
While the on-stage performers’ energy is manic, the underlying script is incredibly slow and repetitive. The once common word play of repeating a single phrase endlessly was abandoned as tedious many years ago. It is small wonder the couple next to the monkey left at the interval, after the man spent most of the first half asleep.
Actually, they missed out, because the second half is substantially better for the most part. The race to stop all-out nuclear war adds tension and Hildegard Bechtler’s bomber set is really rather good (if not sat in the front 3 rows where you are not going to see it so well).
Steve Coogan turns in a masterpiece night of multiple characters. He could (for decency’s sake) drop the Nazi salutes, but his wonderfully correct Captain Mandrake, Reaganesque President Muffley, amusing Major TJ Kong and devious Dr Strangelove himself are a compelling reason to buy a ticket.
There are other equally fun performances. Giles Terera uses both acting and vocal skills to prime effect as relative voice of reason General Turgidson. By contrast, John Hopkins as General Ripper represents all that is mad about the American army, as well as a major threat to vending machines everywhere.
Ben Turner as Colonel Bat Guano (family name) is a fine match for Coogan in their scene together, while Tony Jayawardena earns his fish as Russian Ambassador Bakov and Penny Ashmore brings the house and curtain down as Vera Lynn.
That the whole does not quite live up to Lizzi Gee’s fabulously nutty opening is a disappointment. Times change and, while this show is relevant to our current global feel of unease, the magnitude is very different.
This does capture the contrast, but, rather like “The Man In The White Suit” – another stage adaptation which proved to have aged too far for modern tastes, it is a case of fine performances in search of quicker material.
Dr Strangelove
We were seated in Royal Circle A6 & 7, very good view. The low bar in front was not obstructive. I would book these seats again, as you felt close to the stage. Sadly, the show was very disappointing. The opening musical number (yes, really) was jarring and set the tone for a show where the humour was lame and the jokes, even though telegraphed, fell flat. There was the frenetic pace and signature Iannucci rapid-fire dialogue but it wasn't enough.
Reviews had said that it was worth going for Coogan's performances, but we felt he was just putting on costumes and doing voices. His characterisation of Dr Strangelove felt quite misjudged, although the audience loved his over-camp turn. My guest said, "they are playing it pantomime", which is not what you expect if you know the film.
This show was so limp, we left at the interval (and the tickets weren't cheap!).
Sat in A18 for Dr Strangelove here - it's restricted view, especially in the second half, with Steve Coogan unfortunately blocked some of the time by the war room table and a prop plane. Sitting nearer the ends of row A would give a better view. Even a friend who saw it from stalls row J had some sightline issues at times - circle seats would give the best view.

Never seen the film. I thought the play was a bit of a mess, not as funny as I thought it was going to be and felt dated. Steve Coogan is good, others seem to over act. Nice set, lights etc.
2.5 stars.
Sat in AA10 at the Side of the Balcony. Side seat but could see almost everything and at £15 a bargain! There was no aisle to get to the seat so a row of people had to stand up everytime the folks on my side went to take our seats.

Stalls A21. Had to look up a bit. Missed the back of the stage and couldn't see some things when they were sat around the big table. Also in the plane couldn't see the guy on the left hand side at all. Still good seat for the discounted price. Good legroom and you get more legroom closer you sit to the centre in this row.
Broadway John.

Q14 in the stalls. Better than I thought it would be as there is a reasonable rake towards the back of the theatre and the head in front of you would need to belong to a reasonably tall person to interfere with the view of the stage.
OK show, I thought, though I was sort of wondering why bother (other than to make a few quid, obviously). I found that I was more interested in the stagecraft and the disguised entries onto the set than any deeper involvement with the play. But, a decent night out, the bomber set is great and I think you have it right at three bananas.
